Just a thought

Post by VampiricPadraig on Fri Aug 05, 2011 12:19 am

Had this thought this evening, Just wanted to pass this along and see if any of you were interested.

1) We can't have wiffy.ie - Lupe still owns that (How long, I don't know)
2) We can't have wiffy.com - It costs €15 and it's on "Backorder" according to GoDaddy.

Now, we have a choice between these

These (afaik) are the cheapest domains available.

Whatever we decide to go for (If we do), I will not be providing the full funding of the domain name. This is OUR site, not mine.
If anyone wants to, they can paypal me money which would be solely used towards the domain and nothing else.

Orrrrrrr, If people want to, we could try and get our own hosting and a domain and get off Forumotion completely

It is all up to you guys. Let me hear your thoughts Smile

VP,

I dont mind sending a small donation via paypal etc, to make the site a little more permanent.
I am very grateful the amount of time and effort you put into this site, all from your spare time aswell.
If we did move away from formotion, would you have to spend more time maintaining the site?
I understand you are doing it because you like it, its a hobby etc, but I wouldn't want you to be giving up alot of your time for little or no thanks/return.
Would google adds etc help pay for the site or would you need donations etc?

I feel lupe shut down wiffy due to him "moving on", life took over and he felt he didn't have time to maintain the site and although we were getting a pretty descent site he was getting no love etc.

I think what your proposing is a great idea but do we have the numbers/visitor to sustain it long term?

I think it's a good idea BUT as TheLaw said we do not have the numbers for it to be a good move. If it's not broke don't fix it. And general interest in the site is not good we are lucky to get 4 or 5 post in a week.

Pretty much this.I mean we only have a handful of members who could be classed as frequent posters so is there much point?

Yeah going to have to agree with the rest. We don't really have enough members to bother. In regards to new members it would be unlikely we would get much or any. I think most Irish gamers seeking a forum would probably just use the gaming section on boards.ie. Appreciate you keeping this place going though.

This is true. Having Forumotion takes away the pain and hassle in making sure that the site "works" and since there is no upgrading and updating to do on my end (All done automatically), there is little to no downtime for us, which is something that can turn people away from a site (if you know what I mean)

I like doing website administration like this. Other than Wiffy, I am maintaining 3 other sites, so it is nothing to me to maintain the site, but as I said, Wiffy doesn't need maintaining.

For Google Ads, every click is worth about 60c and there is some limit that you have to hit before I can touch any of it (Forgot the amount) and with the userbase that we have here on Wiffy, it is not feasible for us to have ads on the site, because I know there is people out there (like myself) use AdBlock which totally makes the whole point of ads useless.

(Fuck these colours -_-' )

Lupe has moved on and is now doing marketing for GrabOne.ie and got married and what-have-ya. I have never heard of any of the old staff (Lupe, imLOST or Banzai) since wiffy.ie died.

I am very grateful the amount of time and effort you put into this site, all from your spare time aswell.

Thank You! If it wasn't for warrior00, there would be no wiffy right now, so you can thank him for creating this forum!
